Sean Updates You On Things (and other stuff)! 4/2/12

Hi! Sean here. Sorry it's been so long since any of us have blogged, but I promise to try and be on the ball this time.

Lots happening in our world right now. In January we made a record with the great Mitch Easter and the great Ted Comerford. Both Mitch and Ted are incredible artists and producers and it was a wonderful experience getting to work with them. Being a fan of Mitch's since I was a kid and a fan of the records Ted worked on, particularly with Virginia Coalition, it was extra special. Aside from that, though, this was the most fun we've ever had making a record. We tracked live and built everything up as we went along, as opposed to being overly meticulous and picking apart every little thing. Everyone in the studio loves spontaneity when it comes to recording, and nobody wanted to make too many plans and overthink things. Working this way resulted in the best record we've made so far, and we couldn't be more confident of that. A lot of these songs were tracked in one to three takes, and we'd overdub and mix as we went along. We hadn't planned on doing that; it simply just happened that way. It was a really great experience.

We had a lot of friends contribute to the record, which is always really great for us. Amy Ray from the Indigo Girls is once again on board. Amy made the drive from GA to Mitch's place to sing for us and we had a blast with her. A couple days earlier we'd had a superstar red carpet day, with visits from both Don Dixon (Mitch's partner-in-crime on the early R.E.M. records and a friend of ours for a long time) and Greg Humphreys, leader of Dillon Fence, aka the band I most wanted to be like from age 8 or 9 till...well, present. Dixon provided his signature voice to a song I wrote with his voice in mind, and Greg provided some incredible steel guitar to another song. Mitch and Ted both have cameos on a song we wound up calling 'Kernersville', named after the town where this record was made. Also on 'Kernersville' are Vicki and Debbi Peterson of The Bangles, who kindly contributed vocals all the way from Los Angeles, as well as the legendary Susan Cowsill, our second mother and Continental Drifters/Psycho Sisters bandmate of Vicki, who contributed from New Orleans with the help of her go-to engineer extraordinaire Pete Winkler. I can only assume that her husband and drummer Russ Broussard was nearby, lending moral support or at the very least standing by and letting everyone in the room stare at his fantastic head of hair. 'Kernersville' began as a slow country song that I was writing for Danielle Howle's new project Swamp Sessions. Danielle had suggested I speed the song up and raise the key to make it sound more like a Replacements song, and once I did that I decided to bring it to Swamp Sessions as well as AFT. All I'll say is that I'm glad Danielle offered such a great suggestion. You'll just have to wait and hear.

The record was mastered recently at Sterling Sound in NYC by genius mastering engineers Greg Calbi and Steve Fallone, and that's where we're at with it. We're beginning to explore our options and hope to have a record to you very soon. Stay tuned, and please do try and catch us on the road this spring if you can! We'll be doing dates on our own through April, and then in May we've got some dates with Garrison Starr and Danielle Howle, as well as a show with Drivin N' Cryin. June, so far, has us teaming up with Antigone Rising for a run of shows in the southeast. Check our websites for tour dates and info, of course. Thanks for the support and I'll talk to you very soon.

Was incredible. So sorry I didn’t post every day like I intended, but I really had the most incredible time. I’m in New Orleans now for the week, and when I get back to Charleston (before we leave for tour) I’ll post a whole new blog on my experience.
So grateful.

Last Day in Jerusalem...

Today was a huge day in Jerusalem for us.

Before I tell you about that, I’ll tell you that last night, we all sat around in a circle and prepared for today’s visit to Yad Vashem. We talked about the Holocaust, and heard stories from people who’s family members were directly involved. After that, a few of us stayed in the room to watch a movie about a guy from Philadelphia named Michael Levin that went to Israel on Aliyah and joined the IDF at 21. He died during the Lebanon War in 2006, and his story is really intense.

So we woke up today and got to Yad Vashem. For those that don’t know, Yad Vashem is the Holocause Memorial and Museum in Jerusalem. I knew it was going to be emotionally draining, but I definitely didn’t realize how intense it was going to hit me. We were asked on the ride over to write down our biggest accomplishment and our goal for the future. When we arrived, we made a circle, and everyone who wanted to shared what they wrote down. I think it made us all feel so comfortable with each other, and it definitely made us all bond.

We got to the museum, and just stepping into it felt so crazy. Going into all the different rooms and seeing the pictures made me tear up more than once. Seeing the burnt shoes, pictures, and other things recovered from some of the concentration camps made it all less distant. I still am in awe that 6 million Jews died in the Holocaust. It was probably one of the most intense experiences of my life thus far. We watched a film about a Auschwitz survivor that met his wife while they were both being tortured at the camp, and that just put it all into perspective. The last thing we did was go through the children’s memorial, and the faces, names, and ages of the 1.5 million Jewish children that died during this were read as we walked through.

We ended our experience at Yad Vashem by taking the notes that we all wrote, putting them in a cup, and burning them. This was done to symbolize that even though they may try to burn us and ruin us, we as Jews owe it to the people who died and the children who never even lived to celebrate our accomplishments and achieve our goals. This really brought me to tears.

After that emotional experience, we were brought to Mt. Herzl National Military Cemetery. This was such an amazing thing to see. For those that do not know, all Israelis are required to serve in the IDF (Israeli Defence Force) from age 18 to 20, and continue if they so choose. The great part about going here was that, since yesterday, we have had 7 Israeli soldiers (4 men, 3 women), all our age, added to our group until Thursday. It was amazing to think about the commitment they have to doing this, and also to see them in uniform walking around this cemetery. We saw the grave of the Philadelphia born Michael Levin, who I mentioned died in 2006, and it brought me to tears. After hearing his life story in the movie last night, it was insane to see his grave right in front of me.

We explored the rest of the cemetery, seeing graves and hearing stories of soldiers that had died. At one point we got to the section of the people that died in the Independence War. Our amazing Birth Right guide, Avi, told us that the majority of the men that were buried here had survived the Holocaust. He said that some of them didn’t know their names when they came to Israel because their entire families died. One thing he said struck me. He said that he felt being in that section was one of the most important things on this trip because, to these particular men, we were their family. We are the ones that come to visit them. Their real families don’t because they were taken away from them during the Holocaust. We were their family. That was truly amazing. We ended the visit by going to the highest point on Mt. Herzl – the grave of Theodor Herzl. He was the man responsible for coming up with the idea of the state of Israel. He dreamed of a place where all Jews could be a nation, and in his will, he wrote that when this state is established, he would like his bones to be moved there. He died in 1904. In 1947, the state of Israel was officially declared a nation by the UN, and his body was moved to the top of Mt. Herzl.

Overall, today has been emotionally draining, but rewarding at the same time. I’ve always felt more connected to my Jewish root than anything, and since I’ve been here, I finally know why. I am so proud to be a Jew. This is the land of my people. This nation was created for us, and it feels so good to finally come home.

Off to bed….have to be up in 4 hours to hike the Masada to watch the sunrise.

Shabbat Shalom Day 1

Been up 33 hours with about 45 minutes total of sleep in there. Exhausted, to say the least, but I’m having an amazing experience so far.
The 10 hour flight wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. We arrived at Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv at 7am Israel time and immediately headed to Jerusalem for lunch/breakfast (they serve salad and tuna and humus for breakfast along with some normal items), then went to a spot where we saw a beautiful panoramic view of the city. We then took an impromptu stop at the Western Wall, and even though we’re going back on Sunday, I’ll be forever grateful for this stop today. It was the first time in a very long time that it snowed (and hailed) in Jerusalem, and while it was miserably cold, it was an amazing sight to see. The best part about this stop was that we were doing it on a Friday afternoon, right before the start of the Shabbat. The orthodox and ultra-orthodox Hasidic Jews were at the wall praying, and on the men’s side (the wall is split in half, with a women’s side and a men’s side), there was a cave of sorts where they prayed. They rocked back and forth while they said their prayers, and it was the most overwhelmingly spiritual experience I have ever had. I’ve felt sort of drained since that happened. The feeling I got while I was in there is impossible to describe or even talk about. This is probably the most holy and historically significant place in Israel, and to be standing there on this day was something I will never forget.
After the Western Wall, we went to marketplace in Jerusalem and explored for a bit. We were split in to groups and asked to get specific items for the post Shabbat dessert, so we did just that. We then headed to the hotel, got to relax for a little while, and then started the Shabbat service. We sang songs, lit candles, had a very enlightening discussion on God and spirituality, had a little while to rest, and then had an amazing feast.
Getting to experience this on Day 1 of being in Israel was so unexpected. It’s amazing so far, and I’m so looking forward to the rest of the trip. I’m heading to bed early so I can wake up to go to a Saturday morning Shabbat service at an orthodox temple.
Kol Tuv.

Kol Tuv.

Mah Ha’Inyanim?
I love getting to travel for a living. It’s the best feeling in the world going to a new city every night playing your music to people who want to hear it.
We’re taking most of March off (with the exception of a date in NOLA and a date in Atlanta at the end of March) to focus on some work that has to do with the new record.
What better way to spend time off the road with the band then to take a personal trip to Israel. I’ll be flying up to NY tomorrow, February 29th, and flying from NY to Israel the next day, March 1st. I am beyond excited for this new adventure, and I promise I will constantly post updates on here whenever I can.
L’hitraot.
